In 1969, a small group of senior citizens organized a Senior citizens Club in a room provided by the Salvation Army.  It was soon apparent that a more formal organization was needed; and in March of 1970, Washington Area Senior Citizens Center became an incorporated non-profit organization, with an initial 2-year grant from Washington-Greene Community Action.  When initial funding expired, a subcontract with the Washington County Commissioners was obtained to continue the program for another 2 years.  Since 1974, subcontracts have been granted by the Area Agency on Aging.

Our mission is to provide services addressing the needs of the growing number of seniors including traditional programs of socialization, recreation and nutrition.  Washington Area Senior Citizens Center, Inc. is one of the few facilities especially designed to help meet some of the needs of Senior Citizens.  Physical and financial limitations along with the ever spiraling inflation rate make it ever more difficult for many of our elderly citizens to maintain a satisfactory level of independent living.  Limited transportation has a profound effect on the low and middle-income elderly.  Isolation becomes a serious problem.  Center programs and activities help the elderly maintain their personal independence, reduce loneliness, increase a sense of belonging and status in society, remain active, and live out their lives in dignity.  In September 1977, the center relocated to its current building at 69 W. Maiden St.
